El Lagartillo is the home of the theatre group Capullo,
the
only rural theatre group in Nicaragua, boasting its own cultural
house in the village.
The Higueron reforestation project and its tree nursery are also
present and backed by the organisation Ciclon de
Solidarité.
A community seed-bank is being organised in order to
conserve traditional and heirloom seeds as a way of ensuring food
security threatened by the introduction of hybrid and genetically
modified seeds.
Los Rústicos del Norte is a
traditional acoustic band formed by musicians from the community
including several young prodigies! Their second album is coming soon.
Other community projects include an organic
coffee
plantation, an organic
citrus orchard and a sugar-cane press which
was brought back into use after a long period of abandonment. All
processing is done onsite and by hand and depending on the time of year
students may have the opportunity to help out and learn about the
processes.
